Got Windows 2000 and want to run Quicktime? tough luck

Through reading comments over at Brian Krebs Security Fix, is found out that Quicktime 7.2 is not supported on Windows 2000. Just to verify that for myself, I tried installing on Windows 2000 and found that only XP and Vista are supported.

Windows 2000 is slowly riding into the sunset, however Microsoft still supplies security patches for the OS. I'm not sure what extra cost Apple would incur by allowing the software on Windows 2000. At this point, I think I have no other choice but to uninstall Quicktime from the remaining Windows 2000 computers.

It looks like the download just contains MSI files... if you want you can edit them with Orca and remove the VersionNT check in LaunchCondition. I haven't actually tested it, but these sort of "hacks" work with most software.

Thats a good idea.

I'm a bit afraid of Orca, but this sounds like a fairly easy edit.

I must admit though, I relish the thought of the few Windows 2000 users left in my organization being prodded to upgrade.

If you download and extract the iTunes package for Windows 2000 it includes the Quicktime 7.1.6.200 install msi, which presumable has the security fixes.

7.1.6.200 is the version that came out at the end of May. 7.2 fixes 8 security vulnerabilities.

Apparently Apple is willing to get money from Windows 2000 users (people who buy things on itunes), but its not willing to provide security updates for them anymore.

Quicktime is a required component of itunes, so they give them a version that is still vulnerable.

I was able to install QuickTime 7.2 on Windows 2000 by changing the LaunchCondition "VersionNT" entry to say VersionNT>=500 (instead of 501 which is XP)
Then had to copy gdiplus.dll into the /Program Files/QuickTime folder
